CHANGE; Puppies and New Fitness Routines

Change is HARD. We all know this. So are new puppies and fitness routines! 

Change seems hard for some people and easier for others? Why? Some might say its your personality type. But I’m learning that your mindset determines how well you adapt to change. Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!” In other words if you tell yourself the change is going to be tough it will be and if you tell yourself the change will be smooth it will be. It all depends on YOU!  Many situations bring about change in our lives; graduation from high school or college, marriage, a new baby, a move, loss of a loved one and even a new puppy.

 

I like structure. Ask anyone who knows me well and they will tell you I love routine, order and organization.  I am also a type A personality so I don’t adjust well to change or last minute decisions.

 

For Christmas, we surprised our 3 children with a new puppy. My husband and I researched different dog breeds trying to find just the right one for our family. We found a Bassett Hound puppy and decided this would be a great fit for our kids! I was super excited about giving this puppy to our children since they had been asking for a dog for almost 2 years. Plus, it was a surprise! My husband and I couldn’t wait to see their faces. But after the first night, reality set in that we now had a puppy to feed, love and care for even through the whimpering and yelping. I knew this was going to take some adjusting, but it didn’t make the small mundane tasks any easier when it started. Tasks such as feeding, going in and out to potty, bathing, playing, and training; all mundane tasks, but with consistency would teach our new puppy routine and keep him happy. (and mom happy too!)

Seems like the first 30 days of any change are always the hardest, aren’t they?  No matter what the change or new routine is in your life it’s never easy. Take a New Years resolution to be healthier and fit. At first, you are excited at the thought of doing something good for yourself. In fact, you can’t wait to get started with that new gym membership, personal trainer or at home workout program. But then reality sets in and you realize this isn’t gonna be as easy as you had thought it would be. It’s gonna take some work.

  • You’re gonna have to re-arrange your schedule to either get up earlier or at least block out time later in the day to actually complete your workout!
  • You’re gonna need to prep and plan your food, so you can stay on track with your nutrition! But you’re not sure what to eat, how much to eat or when’s the best time to eat? 
  • You start to compare yourself to others at the gym or wherever you workout, and realize your body can’t do what others can! You’re body is instead saying “Hold up…wait! What are you doing?”

Maybe you start strong and then after a few days or weeks you throw in the towel because it gets hard and you start to make EXCUSES as to why you can’t continue! Of course it is hard, if it were easy EVERYONE would be doing it!

I understand because when I first started my journey it was hard for me too!
